AIR NEW ZEALAND CAPTAIN - Monique Garrett

AIR NEW ZEALAND CAPTAIN | Q300 Bombardier Airliner

Just 26 years old, this accomplished pilot is one of New Zealand’s youngest female national airline captains. And she’s from New Plymouth.

Monique went to school at Woodleigh Primary, Highlands Intermediate, and New Plymouth Girls High School.

Passionate about aviation, she continued her education by learning to fly at the New Plymouth Aero Club in 2011.

Monique epitomizes the old adage if you’re determined enough you can achieve anything.

After gaining her CPL (Commercial Pilot’s Licence) Monique Garrett moved to Western Australia to work as an instructor, before returning home in 2015. She then flew for Barrier Air flying twin engine Britton Norman Islanders between Auckland and Great Barrier Island.

Her opportunity to fly with Air New Zealand came in 2016. By early 2019, Monique qualified as captain of the 50-seat Bombardier Q300 airliner, one of the country’s most popular commuter aircraft.

Monique flies this very aeroplane, ZK-NEC seen here on finals for Auckland Airport.

She even flies NEC to New Plymouth. Home. Where it all began, flying the tiny robust Cessna 152.

The New Plymouth Airspresso Team thanks Monique and Air New Zealand for the aspirational story of this young aviation industry leader.
